Inhabit the Moment

Posted: 01 Aug 2014 10:12 AM PDT

‘We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are.’ ~Bill Watterson

By Leo Babauta

We all go through our lives almost on autopilot, our minds generally elsewhere, occupied with other thoughts as we float through the real world like ghosts.

We sit at a computer, have a coffee, eat a snack, use the bathroom, wash our hands, drive home … and barely notice anything about any of those activities.

This is called “being occupied”, and we do it all the time.

Instead, I suggest we practice occupying the current moment. Inhabit it, by really being in it, fully experiencing all our senses in everyday ordinary actions.

Whatever you’re doing right this moment is not an insignificant thing to be rushed through to get to the next thing. What you’re reading, where you’re sitting, the urination you’re going to do soon … these are not minor things.

They are everything.

As you wash a dish, instead of having your mind elsewhere, instead of rushing through it, give that task a little space. Be there, with that task. Feel how your body feels standing in front of the sink. See the water, the dish, the food residue you’re washing off. See the light in the kitchen, hear the sounds of the refrigerator and the passing cars outside, notice the spilled drops of coffee on the counter.

As you pee, don’t just think of it as something you’ve done thousands of times, to be taken for granted. Feel the sensation like it’s the first time. Be a child who has never noticed what the bubbles of pee look like in a toilet before. It’s a thing of wonder, a thing to behold with the same weight as we behold all of life, and sex, and death.

Imagine you have a month to live — what would each moment be worth to you then? Each bite would be one of your last. Each sip of coffee, each sunsoaked morning trip to the kitchen, each step on the grass, each conversation with the people you know and take for granted.

These are limited, and so valuable. They are precious and contain wonders.

Well, you might have more than a month to live (who knows for sure?), but your moments are still extremely limited. These are still valuable experiences, not to be taken for granted.

Practice this. Every action you take today, no matter how little … give it weight. Put some space around it. Start it intentionally, with the intention to be mindful, to inhabit that action fully, to notice with all your senses the entire moment. When the action is done, don’t just rush to the next one, but take half a second to appreciate what you just experienced. Then move to the next with equal weight and space.

If you don’t start treating this next action like it’s just as important as what’s coming later, you might never.

‘… stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.’ ~Leo Tolstoy

They Are Your Words… You Chose Them (post by Kirk Weisler)

your wordsThey’re your words, choose them – you’ve seen the signs:

ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIT CARDS.

NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS.

BATHROOMS FOR PATRONS ONLY.

Guess what? There’s no legal requirement that signs have to make you sound like a harsh jerk in order to carry weight or to inform the public.

  • To keep our prices as low as possible, we only accept cash. The good news is that there’s an ATM next door.
  • Careful! We’d like to watch your stuff for you, but we’re busy making coffee.
  • Our spotlessly clean restrooms are for our beloved customers only, so come on in and buy something! Also, there’s a public bathroom in the library down the street.

In fact, you might find that when you speak clearly and with respect, you not only communicate more effectively, but people are less likely to blame you when something goes wrong.

The above post from Seth inspired the below weekly “Quote and Question” of the IT Professionals and Team at St Vrain Valley Schools… a team that is deliberately creating a more positive and purposeful workplace culture with every word they speak.

Quote: “In fact, you might find that when you speak clearly and with respect, you not only communicate more effectively, but people are less likely to blame you when something goes wrong.”  From http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2014/04/theyre-your-words-choose-them.html

Question: Can you identify words we/you are using that, if changed, would yield dramatically better results?

I can identify a few words and in addition to those…. I think…..

If I were king for a day… I think I would like to eliminate all use of the word “unfortunately” especially by people who have anything to do with customer service.  🙂

Happiness…
“Every day we have plenty of opportunities to get angry, stressed or offended. But what you’re doing when you indulge these negative emotions is giving something outside yourself power over your happiness. You can choose to not let little things upset you.― Joel Osteen

All He Wants is Birthday Cards (can you send him one?)

What Does This Mass. Boy Battling Cancer Want For His Birthday? A Bunch Of Birthday Cards

Jul 18, 2014, 5:39 PM ET

By YAZHOU SUN via Good Morning America

Danny Nickerson, 5, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor last month, wants a big box of birthday cards for his birthday.

(See mailing address below)
A 5-year-old Massachusetts boy battling cancer said all he wants for his upcoming birthday is a box of birthday cards.

Danny Nickerson, of Foxboro, Massachusetts, will turn six on July 25. He was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor this past October — one of the most chemotherapy-resistant cancers. As a result, he has since stopped going to kindergarten.

The boy gets lonely from time to time, and is always happy to get cards with his name written on them.

“He can recognize his name now,” Carley Nickerson, Danny’s mother told ABC News. “When he saw his name on the package from magical fairies on Easter, he was so happy.”

But the packages and cards stopped after Easter.

“He had 33 radiations from November through December last year,” Nickerson said. “We are now getting chemo therapy every two weeks.”

Doctors tell Nickerson that less than 10 percent of the children diagnosed with this type of cancer live longer than 18 months.

“I don’t really believe in that. He is doing great,” Nickerson said. “Every day is a blessing for us,”

So far, Danny has received about 40 letters.

“I gave him to key to the P.O. box,” Nickerson said. “He was so excited when he opened it.”

Nickerson said Danny loves Lego and Super Mario.

“I wish Lego makes Super Mario toys,” Nickerson chuckled. “That would really make him happy.”

Danny’s birthday is July 25.

All cards can be mailed the Nickerson’s home addressed:

Danny Nickerson, P.O. Box 212, Foxboro, MA, 02035.

Enough with “Not Enough”!! (post by Kirk Weisler)

Have you ever in your life spent time worrying that you weren’t enough?

NOT – Tall enough, handsome enough, pretty enough, feminine enough, thin enough, smart enough, tough enough, rich enough – or good enough!

Well yesterday Jeff Madison sent me the link to video that wonderfully says… in effect.   We become truly powerful the moment we truly learn to accept ourselves.  And that what we have and who we are is enough…. at least enough to begin living life and loving it and improving upon it.

Now we know we are enough to get started….let’s get started.

This Teacher Was Hated By His Students – Until They Learned His Shocking Truth (Blog by Petflow)

Jim O’Connor wasn’t exactly the most popular teacher at St. Francis High School. They thought he was tough, demanding and boring. That is, until one of his students visited a children’s hospital near the school.

There, the student heard about Mr. O’Connor’s second job: holding, feeding and comforting sick babies. It turns out, Jim has been doing this for years, and is known around the hospital as one of the gentlest, sweetest men, which in turn completely shocked his students. Once words spread and his class saw their teacher for who he really is, they began to see him in a new light — and today, they have a new-found love and respect for Mr. O’Connor! I’m SO touched by this story!
