Making Positive Waves…. the Ripple Effect (post by Kirk Weisler)

ripple effect

Another brilliant and insightful post from “Paul-The Ripples Guy” – for more on Paul go to his site www.theripplesproject.org and magnify the purposeful ripples of positivity in your life.

The Pebble (think ripples in a pond)

What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other? -George Eliot

The Boulder (Same Principle more words bigger ripple)

Your job is not to judge.
Your job is not to figure out
if someone deserves something.
Your job is to lift the fallen,
to restore the broken,
and to heal the hurting.
-The Essence of Life-

Ponder – (This is the Boulder, the big idea to not just think about but to put into practice , thus creating ripples around the world.)

I don’t believe that we have an *obligation* to help every single person we encounter.

I do believe that there is an *opportunity* to help every single person we encounter. Every. Single. Person.

The lost ones, the frustrated ones, the nice ones and the mean ones. And the magnificent secret that I hesitate to share with you because we took a solemn oath at the last meeting of the “Benevolent Order of Those Who Strive To Be As Nice As Possible to Everyone We Encounter”: the person who benefits the most from all the helping is often YOU! Serving others feels great; it reminds us to be grateful for blessings that we take for granted, and as a bonus it replenishes our “karma credit card” so we can be in great shape to receive help from others just when we need it most.

Just remember that helping works best when it emanates not from a sense of duty or obligation, but instead from a source of joyous opportunity. So keep your eyes and ears open for a friend or colleague or stranger who needs you..
Peace,

Paul

First Thing Every Morning (from Simple Truths)

Turn Your Life Around One Day at a Time
by Lewis Timberlake with Elinor Griffith

first thing in the morning

If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400—with no balance carried from day to day—what would you do? Well, you do have such a bank…time.

Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it rules off as “lost” whatever you have failed to use toward good purposes. It carries over no balances and allows no overdrafts. You can’t hoard it, save it, store it, loan it or invest it. You can only use it—time.

Here’s a story that drives the point home.

Arthur Berry was described by Time as “the slickest second-story man in the East,” truly one of the most famous jewel thieves of all times. In his years of crime, he committed as many as 150 burglaries and stole jewels valued between $5 and $10 million. He seldom robbed from anyone not listed in the Social Register and often did his work in a tuxedo. On an occasion or two, when caught in the act of a crime by a victim, he charmed his way out of being reported to the police.

Like most people who engage in a life of crime, he was eventually caught, convicted and served 25 years in prison for his crimes. Following his release, he worked as a counterman in a roadside restaurant on the East Coast for $50 a week.

A newspaper reporter found him and interviewed him about his life. After telling about the thrilling episodes of his life he came to the conclusion of the interview saying, “I am not good at morals. But early in my life I was intelligent and clever, and I got along well with people. I think I could have made something of my life, but I didn’t. So when you write the story of my life, when you tell people about all the burglaries, don’t leave out the biggest one of all…Don’t just tell them I robbed Jesse Livermore, the Wall Street baron or the cousin of the king of England. You tell them Arthur Berry robbed Arthur Berry.”

First: Nobody can manage time. But you can manage those things that take up your time.

Second: Time is expensive. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of our day is spent on those things or those people that only bring us two percent of our results.

Third: Time is perishable. It cannot be saved for later use.

Fourth: Time is measurable. Everybody has the same amount of time…pauper or king. It is not how much time you have; it is how much you use.

Fifth: Time is irreplaceable. We never make back time once it is gone.

Sixth: Time is a priority. You have enough time for anything in the world, so long as it ranks high enough among your priorities.

What you’ve just read is an excerpt from First Thing Every Morning by Lewis Timberlake. This book has everything you need to energize your life—reflections, stories and quotes that’ll lift your spirits and lighten your load. His insights on more than 50 topics will help you to turn your life around…one day at a time.

Thank You Sgt. Brian Meyer (Post by Frank Somerville KTVU)

gunnery sgt brian meyer

Who does something like this?
Look closely at the picture on the left.
That’s Marine Gunnery Sgt. Brian Meyer.

A bomb in Afghanistan had just blown off his leg, his hand, and three fingers on his other hand.
And yet there he is smiling.
And he was doing it on purpose.

GySgt. Meyer ordered another Marine to take this picture.
He forced a smile despite the pain, because he was worried about the impact his injuries would have on his squad. He hoped the picture would make it easier for them to deal with what happened.

Can you imagine?
He was just seriously injured and yet he was thinking about his fellow Marines and how THEY were feeling.

I find that kind of spirit beyond remarkable.
And it’s that spirit that is helping GySgt. Meyer through his recovery process. And helping him become independent despite his injuries.

The picture on the right is him now.
He says: “I focus on what I have left, not what I lost.”
What a great attitude.

GySgt. Meyer also works for the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund, counseling fellow combat veterans.
And he uses the picture of him injured to show them what’s possible.

He says:
“It’s the exact opposite of what somebody expects you to do.
So when I show it to people and they are inspired by it, instead of being shocked, I know they get it.”

I hate war.
I hate seeing how many young men and woman have lost their lives.
And I hate seeing how many young men and women have suffered life changing injuries.

But at the same time, I find stories about veterans like GySgt. Meyer incredibly powerful.
They are a reminder that there is always hope, no matter how bad the situation is.
They are a reminder that all of us are capable of so much more than we think we are.
And they are a reminder to NEVER give up.

Thank you GySgt. Meyer.
To you and all other veterans: Stay strong!

Soap that Saves and Socks that Smile (post by Kirk Weisler)

happy-soap-savings-kirk-weisler-1

Innovation is alive and well in our world and you don’t have to be building rockets, programming smart phone apps, or designing high tech to make entrepreneurial inroads or be kinder the environment.  Let me give you two quick fun examples.  I am staying at the Concordia Hotel in Washington DC and the soap in my hotel room has a hole in it.  A purposeful hole.  The package proudly proclaims it’s high percentage of recycled components… truly they care about cleaning up the environment.  🙂

I wonder if they were inspired by Donuts?

Ok, now for Socks that can make you smile.

I have two teen aged boys and it seems that a trend among teens these days is “cool socks”.  For example you might wear a grey suit with an electric blue tie…and socks that match the tie.  Or you might just wear crazy socks period.

While I have never had truly crazy cool socks… I have had some fun socks.  I once had 7 pairs of socks that had the days of week on them.  Monday socks, Tuesday socks, Wed socks and so on.  It was while talking about socks and teenagers with friend Jim Gunnel from Southwest Power Pool that I guess he decided what I really needed to be a cooler Dad to my teens was Happy Socks.  So he sent me some.

WOW!   They really make Happy Socks !

But do they work and can they make you happy?   Not sure… so decided to test the product…and include the team.  To truly “test” the socks ability to bring happiness to the wearer I thought that I should try both different ages and genders….and even some painted toe nails.

happy-socks-kirk-weisler-1

The results, well I think the following picture says it all.  As you can clearly see of the 4 test subjects that the 3 wearing the Happy Socks are clearly smiling while the 4th wearing only a blue striped jumper and a heavy diaper is not smiling. http://www.happysocks.com/us/

happy-socks-kirk-weisler-3

I am not saying that you or anyone needs Happy Socks to be happy.   In fact I stand by o make it again and again especially when life gets especially challenging or when people are being especially difficult.  We must never allow ourselves to become victims to the whims, will, and toxicity of others and say things like “Well they made me angry.” – or Sad, or Mad, or anything of that ilk.  People may intentionally try to make you angry or just un-intentionally irritate you, but we are response-able for our choice.

We can choose happiness.   And if socks can help… then so be it.  🙂

Choose a Happy Day –  I am … and with these socks on, how can I can fail?

Thanks Jim for the socks and the smile….and thanks 99Sixty for the Soap that helps to save.
