3 Doors to Open

open door

Not knowing when the dawn will come, I open every door. ~Emily Dickinson

For all I am
And still hope to be
You were my guide
You were the key
That opened the door
To the feast of ideas.
~Evelyn Kandel

If you’re feeling stuck or trapped or limited in any way, let’s make this week about opening doors. Sample the thing you’ve been afraid of, or attempt something you’ve never tried before. The Greatest Super Power (post by Kirk Weisler)

common sense

The three great essentials to achieving anything worthwhile are; first, hard work, second, stick-to-it-iveness, and third, common sense. — Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931) American Inventor

Do you ever get the impression that common sense isn’t really that common?  That perhaps it’s even a rare gift or a diminishing talent?  I know that when I see it or experience it is a beautiful and refreshing thing.  Is it a Super power?  Maybe not….but it can be super important to our success as leaders and team members !

Where does common sense come from?  (Must we be bitten by the radio-active common sense spider?)

Is common sense something you either have or you don’t?

Can it be developed in others and strengthened in ourselves?

I don’t pretend to have all the answers to these questions but I am interested in hearing your opinions.

My own answer is yes,.   Like any talent or muscle it can be developed and strengthened through practice.  I do like the picture of our hero character saying “Shhhh, My common sense is tingling.”   I think one of the greatest exercises a person might do is to train themselves to take a moment to listen to that inner voice, especially after asking themselves a question such as, “Is this the best choice I can make?”  or “What is the best way that this might be approached?”  I also like, “How will this choice I am about to make affect others?”

I have also many times had the thought that just because something “can be done” doesn’t mean that it should be done.

Shhhh, I feel something tingling.  It’s not my common sense, it’s just my phone on vibrate.  Time to go.

Make it a great day…. use your CS  SUPER POWER!

Rocky, somewhat of a Pesty? (thought by Kirk Weisler)

rocky

I think I’d like to be remembered as someone who beat the odds through just plain determination. … that I persevered. Because I think that being somewhat of a pest to life, constantly plaguing and pursuing, will bring results.  – Sylvester Stallone (1946-) American Actor

At an early age I fell in love with Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky character and followed all the Rocky films (some painfully).

But it wasn’t until I matured and a little that I learned more of the story about how the story of the making of the 1st Rocky movie was almost a shadow of the storyline of the film itself.  An underdog film about an underdog boxer born of the vision of an underdog actor.  Lovely stuff really… but the quote above coming from an older wiser Stallone looking back,  really invites us all to revisit our need and our willingness to be persistent, and even PESTY in pursuit of our goals and dreams.

When has being PESTY been necessary for your success ?

Thanks Rocky…you have inspired me again!

2-Year-Old’s Adorable Birthday Message for Mommy Will Make Your Heart Melt

2 year old

One very special mother just received the birthday present of a lifetime, and it was completely free.

“Usually my wife’s birthday is a pretty big deal so I try to do something new,” Dan Konkel, 28, of Bridgewater, N. J., told GoodMorningAmerica.com.

So when he sat down about a month prior to the big day brainstorming ideas of how to up the ante from last year, the couple’s adorable 2-year-old daughter, Claire, immediately came to mind, and the result was pure magic.

“Hi Mommy!” little Claire announced in the heart melting video she and father, a professional photographer, recorded for her mom, Stacey. “I just wanted to say, ‘Happy Birthday.'”

Father Thwarts Little Girl’s Fear of Fireworks by Singing Sweet Duet

The blonde, bright-eyed, pigtailed toddler continues to list the reasons why she loves her mommy so much, and each one is more inspiring than the first. “You’re beautiful,” Claire lists as number one. “You are amazing,” comes in at number two. As for number three, “You’re the best mommy ever.” She struggles a bit with number four, but it’s probably one of the most flattering to any mother’s ears: “You’re the best cook.”

Since Konkel gets to spend a lot of time with Claire while his wife is at work, he wanted to create a condensed video of Claire’s vast love for her mommy into something she could watch and enjoy whenever she wanted to.

“I sat her down in the living room and we had a conversation for about 40 minutes about Mommy and toys and food,” Konkel said of his little girl, who hand-picked her outfit for the “movie” they were making.

But the entire conversation wasn’t all upbeat, as the little girl suddenly got very deep on her unsuspecting dad.

“I started talking about when Mommy’s not here,” Konkel explained. “I said, ‘She works so hard, doesn’t she?’ She was like, ‘Mommy works so hard,’ almost on the verge of tears, and I was on the other side of the camera in the living room like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ It just poured out.”

Little Claire’s adorably heartfelt, personal message for her mother’s 28 th birthday definitely takes the cake as the best gift ever, and it seems the entire Internet agrees, with one Reddit poster even commenting to other dads, “Gentleman: The bar has been raised.”

In order to surprise his wife, Konkel edited together the video, uploaded it to her iPad and hid it in her baby bag with a note that said, “Hey, watch me.”

“She said it was the best birthday present she ever got,” Konkel, who is unsure how he’ll ever top this gift next year, said.

Chewing Gum Could Make You Smarter

Posted by Laura Schwecherl on March 6, 2012

Chew on this: Gum may not only satisfy taste buds and freshen breath. Studies have found chewing a stick of gum may enhance cognitive performance and even improve mood [1].

BUBBLICIOUS BRAINPOWER — THE TAKEAWAY

While coffee is indeed amazing for you, there’s another way to get a quick boost of

concentration without the caffeine jitters. Chewing gum can help increase alertness and attention. In one study, chewing gum was an A+ advantage: People performed better on verbal and math problems and were about 10 percent more alert when they chomped away [2]. Other research suggests chewing gum can boost brainpower in people of all ages. Middle-school gum chewers received higher grades in math compared to non-chewers [3]. (That’s why I was so bad at algebra…). And a stick of Trident (or another favorite brand, of course!) may even be helpful during a long day at the office, since chewing mint or caffeinated gum can decrease sleepiness [4] [5].

A boost of happiness may be found inside the wrapper, too. A stick of gum has proved to increase heart rate and cortisol levels, which sometimes results in a better mood [6]Another study found two weeks of gum-chewing decreased participants’ anxiety and some symptoms of depression (Let’s hope it wasn’t the same piece the whole time.) [7].

There may not be a definitive reason for chewing gum’s magical mental enhancement. Lucky for teeth, the answer isn’t the sugar, since scientists have experimented with sugar-filled and sugar-free gum. Some experts suggest it may not be the gum itself, but rather the act of chewing that keeps us alert and focused.

But the effects of chewing gum may last only as long as its flavor. People who chewed gum five minutes before tackling a series of cognitive tasks only performed better than a control group for the first 20 minutes [8]. Pro tip: Save that Juicy Fruit for the hardest part of the test, and then spit it out.

THE TIP

Pop a stick of gum to help increase attention, boost mood, and ward off sleepiness.
