Do You Really Listen?

“His thoughts were slow,
His words were few, and never formed to glisten.
But he was a joy to all his friends–
You should have heard him listen.”

Things Big, Things Little, Things Noble and Great (post by Kirk Weisler)

I love this quote from Helen Keller —

“I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.”  – Helen Keller

It reminds me of another by Stephen Covey … “In relationships the little things are the big things.”

To become recognized as truly as a person of great and noble character is rarely if ever the result of some singular great and heroic action.  Instead it results from the cumulative effect of consistently doing those “little things” or small tasks with care and consistency…..

Health & Fitness is not the result of one healthy meal or one trip to the gym.   To obtain the truly great and noble goals of tomorrow requires from us many small and deliberate things today.

Today – I ate right, read well and chose wisely.  Tomorrow… I am committed to doing it again!

Train Blog (7/25/12)

This dude on the train is talking very loud on the phone to his girl.  Did I say Loud?  He keeps saying, “I didn’t say I breaking up with you”, “huh”, “I didn’t say I breaking up with you”.  A few curse words in between the “I didn’t say I breaking up with you”.  Then tourettes must have kicked in because he said, “huh” “huh” “huh” “huh” “I didn’t say breakup” “huh”.  Still talking loud like we were at a Acid Rock concert.  I can’t focus on my magazine because homeboy is talking loud so I blog.  hehehehe.  Ooh now he is saying “hello” “hello” “hey” “hello” and I sure did want to say “it’s not you she’s looking for….” (in my Lionel Richie voice)  lol lol lol lol  huh?  Ooowee, he is off the train and now I have nothing else to blog.  Shoot!!  Until next time, Peace, Love and Soul Lightrail Train!!!

Freeing Yourself & Starting All Over Again

It’s good to tell someone how their behavior makes you feel…in fact, it’s freeing.
You may not mend the {already broken} relationship, but you will maintain your self-respect.

“I hope you live a life that you’re proud of.
If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

Feeling energetic is a key to feeling happy

When you feel energetic, you feel much better about yourself. On the other hand, when you feel exhausted, tasks that would ordinarily make you happy—like getting ready to go to a party or planning a trip—make you feel overwhelmed and blue.

When my energy feels low, I try one of these techniques

(well, first I drink something with caffeine in it, but if I feel like I need to take further steps, I try these strategies):

1. Exercise

Even a quick ten-minute walk will increase your energy and boost your mood. This really works! Try it! People often say they’re too tired to exercise, but, in fact, unless you’re exercising at a very intense level, exercise tends to boost energy rather than deplete it.

2. Listen to Lively Music

This is one of the quickest, easiest ways to get a jolt of energy.

3. Get Enough Sleep

If the alarm blasts you awake every morning, you’re not getting enough sleep—and it matters. Most adults need at least seven hours each night. Don’t kid yourself about how much sleep you need! (Here are some tips for getting good sleep.)

4. Act Energetic

Research shows that when people move faster, their metabolism speeds up. Also, because the way we act influences the way we feel (to an almost uncanny degree), acting with energy will make you feel more energetic. Stand up while talking on the phone, walk quickly, and speak with more animation.

5. Talk to Friends

We get a real charge from connecting with other people. I’ve noticed that if I’m feeling low and then run into a friend on the street, I walk away feeling much more energetic. Reach out if you need a boost. This is true for introverts and extroverts alike.

6. Get Something Done

Crossing a nagging chore off your to-do list provides a big rush of energy. For a huge surge, clean out a closet. You’ll be amazed at how great you feel afterward. A friend once told me, “Every to-do list should include one item that can be crossed off in the first five minutes.” If that’s all you can do, do it; you’ll feel better.

7. Skip the Food Strategy

It’s tempting to reach for a carton of ice cream when you’re feeling listless, but, in the end, all of those extra calories will just drag you down. In general, be wary of the urge to treat yourself when you’re feeling low.

Energy (and lack of) is contagious.

If you feel energetic, you’ll help the people around you feel energetic too. And that makes them feel happier. In fact, in his excellent book, The No A***ole Rule, Bob Sutton reports that being an energizer was one of the strongest predictors of a positive performance evaluation at work. (This is related to the Radiators vs. Drainsdistinction.)

Have you found any good, quick strategies for boosting your energy? Do you agree that your energy affects your happiness?

Good Thoughts for Life

Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah’s Ark.

ONE: Don’t miss the boat.
TWO
: Remember that we are all in the same boat!
THREE
: Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.
FOUR
: Stay fit. When you’re 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
FIVE
: Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
SIX:
Build your future on high ground.
SEVEN
: For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.
EIGHT
: Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
NINE
: When you’re stressed, float awhile.
TEN
: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
ELEVEN
: No matter the storm, there’s always a rainbow waiting.

Most people walk in and out of your life,
but FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart

Talk a Good Game vs Get It Done (post by Kirk Weisler)

Great leaders Teach…and I thought this short video clip might be fun to use in a presentation to teach with.     What do you think?  What principle would you teach with it?   I had 2 immediate thoughts on that I share following the clip… please share yours in the comments section of the T4D at www.kirkweisler.com/t4d  and we can learn how to teach better together.

Talk a Good Game vs Get It Done

I think this video is a great illustration of the difference between those who talk a good a game vs those who just get it done.

It might also be described as the person who spends less time on presentation and marketing and instead just delivers the expected service.

What would you teach with it?

Just Asking!

Me:      God, can I ask you a question?

God:      Sure.

Me:        Promise you won’t get mad.

God:      I promise.

Me:       Why did you let so much stuff happen to me today?

God:      What do you mean?

Me:      Well, I woke up late.

God:     Yes.

Me:       My car took forever to start.

God:     Okay.

Me:      At lunch they made my sandwich wrong and I had to wait.

God:     Huummm.

Me:      On the way home, my phone went dead, just as I picked up a call.

God:     All right.

Me:      And on top of it all, when I got home I just wanted to soak my feet in my new foot massager and relax, but it wouldn’t work!!!  Nothing went right today! Why did you do that?

God:      Let me see, the Death Angel was at your bed this morning and I had
to send one of the other angels to battle him for your life. I let you sleep through that.

Me:       (humbled): OH…

GOD:      I didn’t let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your route that would have hit you if you were on the road.

Me:        (ashamed)

God:      The first person who made your sandwich today was sick and I didn’t want you to catch what they have, I knew you couldn’t afford to miss work.

Me:       (embarrassed): Ok…

God:      Your phone went dead because the person that was calling was going
to give false witness about what you said on that call, I didn’t even let
you talk to them so you would be covered.

Me:      (softly) I see God.

God:      Oh and that foot massager, it had a shortage that was going to throw
out all of the power in your house tonight. I didn’t think you wanted to
be in the dark.

Me:       I’m sorry God.

God:      Don’t be sorry; just learn to trust me…..in all things, the good and the bad.

Me:         I will trust you.

God:        And don’t doubt that my plan for your day is always better than your plan.

Me:          I won’t God. And let me just tell you God, thank you for everything today.

God:         You’re welcome child. It was just another day being your God, and I
love looking after my children.
