That’s Nonsense. Make Up Your Mind…(post from Kirk Weisler)

Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that.

That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, you’ll never use crutches or a stick, then have a go at everything. Go to school, join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to.
But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible. – Sir Douglas Bader was a British fighter pilot who lost both legs in a flying accident, but still fought in World War Two. He was knighted for his work with the disabled, and the quote above is from his talk to a 14-year-old boy who had lost a leg in a car accident. — Sir Douglas Bader (1910-1982) British Aviator

I really can’t speak for anyone except myself. (But I often make the mistake of trying)  But for me…the person most often telling me I can’t do this or that isn’t someone else…it’s me. “I’m to old to do that, or to start doing it.”  – or – “I would need to go back to school before I could do that.” – or – “I just don’t have the resources or connections to accomplish that …” Meanwhile all around me I see and am inspired by those who seem to have heard and responded to the words of Douglas Bader. They have left their limitations lying in a forgotten heap and our focused on creating the future they want and envision. They have made up their mind….and so must you and I!

Douglas Bader certainly get’s my stamp of approval… not that he needs it.  He already earned his own.

No Matter What!!

no matter what

And given some time you’ll realize it was a blessing in disguise. And you will see that what goes around comes around, not because you wished it but because in this life all lessons are learned. You just can’t hurt others with out it coming back to you. You’ll look back and say it sucks that I got hurt but I’m stronger and so better off then if I had continued on that path. ~Claudia Peralta

To Be Appreciated (post from Kirk Weisler)

appreciation

The deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated.

– William James (1842-1910) American Philosopher and Psychologist

Today in midst of all that we ask, need, and request from others in our work and walk through life… perhaps we can also be that refreshing person who gets in line not to request anything…but only to express something.  Appreciation.

Experimentation – It’s Electric (post by Kirk Weisler)

This clip certainly brought back a few memories from my youth.  Wow, the things we experimented in the spirit of exploration or in respond to a dare.  And of course you didn’t quit until you felt a surge of electricity.  EEEEEYAAA!!

I heard a talk over the weekend where the analogy of a toddler learning to walk was used.   The father of the toddler expected him to fall…and fall he did.  Again and again and again.  But the toddler kept getting back up and trying again and getting better.  OF COURSE the father did not chastise the toddler for falling…he did not berate, belittle or criticize him in any way.  Instead what did the father do…. encouraged, coached and cheered the toddler on.

learning to walk

It’s a great way to think about things in the adult context as well.  People are always learning and learning always involves falling or failing to some degree or another. Or at least they should be.

There are so very many things I have never done before.  And now the pace of life is moving quicker than ever and I am moving slower and I may not want to fail or fall…but I do…. a lot.

But the problem isn’t in my failing or falling…it’s in my fear and hesitancy of doing so.  It’s been said that the person who isn’t failing much, isn’t trying much, learning much, living  much or becoming much.   To accelerate our growth rate we might consider accelerating our falling down rate….and getting back up rate.  We need to not just experiment more….but have more fun as we experiment.

We don’t have to grab onto an electric fence to feel a surge of excitement as try something new… and heck bring friends to do the double dares and double the fun.
