When Holland was a baby, she struck a friendship with Mrs. Cynthia, her beloved waitress from Waffle House. And it wasn’t only because Cynthia knew that the girl’s favorite treats were raisin bread and apple juice, but also because they connected on a more personal level.

However, in 2021, 3-year-old Holland put her tiny hands on Mrs. Cynthia’s cheeks and asked her the question that made her mom’s heart stop, “Mrs. Cynthia, I want to have dark skin like you. Why is your skin so dark?”
