Here are a few quotes on one of the hardest subjects. I wish you all a great week filled with forgiveness and new light.
We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
“I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice.” – Abraham Lincoln
“I’m sorry about yesterday,” she said.
He hung on to his straps and shrugged. “Yesterday happens.” – Rainbow Rowell (Eleanor & Park)

Listening is such a simple act. It requires us to be present, and that takes practice, but we don’t have to do anything else. We don’t have to advise, or coach, or sound wise. We just have to be willing to sit there and listen. – Margaret J. Wheatley
One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say. – Bryant H. McGill

Just a day after National Sibling Day flooded your Facebook feed with happy family photos, three brothers decided to celebrate their sister in a different way.
After their younger sister Millicent had her wisdom teeth removed, brothers Cabot, Hudson and Barrett Phillips convinced her that a zombie outbreak had hit their city. And, of course, they captured it all on video.
“The typical wisdom teeth videos are funny but we wanted to do something a little different, and thought the zombie aspect might be a fun twist,” brother and instigator Cabot Phillips says. “We just didn’t anticipate how expressive she would be, and how many one-liners she’d produce — even when terrified and in a drug-induced state.”
They even staged a Center for Disease Control warning over the radio that “State and local officials have reported cases of high fever, nausea, death and even cannibalism.”
“A garden hoe isn’t what we want,” Millicent asks at one point, exasperated. “We have guns, why are you putting garden equipment in the car?”
The highlight of the clip? When her brother breaks it to her that they can only take one pet — the cat or the dog — with them to Mexico, where, apparently, they will be safe from zombies. Her livid response? “The cat, you idiot!”
From there, it only gets better.
Phillips says a ton of people are commenting on the video saying what a great companion Millicent would be in a zombie apocalypse.
“She’s no pushover and does her fair share of pranking her older brothers so she understood that we couldn’t pass up an opportunity like this,” Phillips said. “She took it in stride and just wanted to sleep once she realized that she wasn’t going to be eaten by any zombies.”
Wonder what Millicent has in store for her brothers next.
Gentle, low-impact exercise that’s easy, free and available to everyone – here’s why walking rocks.
1. Walking strengthens your heart
Reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by walking regularly. It’s great cardio exercise, lowering levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. The Stroke Association says that a brisk 30-minute walk every day helps to prevent and control the high blood pressure that causes strokes, reducing the risk by up to 27 percent.
2. Walking lowers disease risk
A regular walking habit slashes the risk of type 2 diabetes by around 60 percent, and you’re 20 percent less likely to develop cancer of the colon, breast or womb with an active hobby such as walking.
3. Walking helps you lose weight
You’ll burn around 75 calories simply by walking at 2mph for 30 minutes. Up your speed to 3mph and it’s 99 calories, while 4mph is 150 calories (equivalent to three Jaffa cakes and a jam doughnut!). Work that short walk into your daily routine and you’ll shed the pounds in no time.
4. Walking prevents dementia
Older people who walk six miles or more per week are more likely to avoid brain shrinkage and preserve memory as the years pass. Since dementia affects one in 14 people over 65 and one in six over 80, we reckon that’s a pretty great idea.
5. Walking tones up legs, bums and tums
Give definition to calves, quads and hamstrings while lifting your glutes (bum muscles) with a good, regular walk. Add hill walking into the mix and it’s even more effective. Pay attention to your posture and you’ll also tone your abs and waist.
6. Walking boosts vitamin D
We all need to get outside more. Many people in the UK are vitamin D deficient, affecting important things like bone health and our immune systems. Walking is the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors while getting your vitamin D fix.
7. Walking gives you energy
You’ll get more done with more energy, and a brisk walk is one of the best natural energisers around. It boosts circulation and increases oxygen supply to every cell in your body, helping you to feel more alert and alive. Try walking on your lunch break to achieve more in the afternoon.
8. Walking makes you happy
It’s true – exercise boosts your mood. Studies show that a brisk walk is just as effective as antidepressants in mild to moderate cases of depression, releasing feel-good endorphins while reducing stress and anxiety. So for positive mental health, walking’s an absolute must.
This is Akintunde Ahmad.
And to me he’s what Oakland is all about.
He graduated from Oakland Tech in 2014 with a 5.0 G.P.A.
He scored 2100 on his SAT.
He played baseball.
He played in the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra.
And now he attends one of the best universities in the world.
He now studies at Yale.
Ahmad has made it.
But it wasn’t easy.
He told SF Gate:
“There’s plenty of people I know who have been killed.
I could write a list starting in elementary school of all the people we grew up with who have been killed.”
But now Ahmad has beaten the odds.
And he wants other people growing up in the inner city to realize that they can do it too.
He says:
“I want to use my life and personal experiences as a testament to what a black kid from an inner-city in America is capable of.”
Ahmad is proof that they are capable of doing anything they put their mind to.
