Learning Through the Windshield

Imagine that you’re going on a trip in your car.  You’re in the driver’s seat behind the wheel rolling down the road.  So far everything is normal except that you’re looking through the rear view mirror to see the road behind you in order to predict what the road in front of you looks like.  So, you’re looking back to move forward.

  • Would you recommend driving like this?
  • What would you say to someone driving like this?
If this sounds ridiculous and that it doesn’t apply to you – hold on for a moment.  How often do you live your life or base your learning using this method (trying to move forward by focusing only on the past)?

The Road Changes too Fast to use the Rear View Mirror

If you keep driving forward using the rear view mirror, you’re going to:

  • Drive off the road and get hurt
  • Only drive on safe, straight known roadways
  • Not drive at all

None of these scenarios are going to help you learn and make a better future.  The past may feel comfortable or familiar but is it getting you where you want to go?  Are you taking in new experiences through your windshield?

Opportunities are Endless Through the Windshield

The windshield is where the fun and learning takes place!  If you don’t think this is true, have you ever brought a child from the back seat to the front seat so that they could see better?  What was their expression?  Usually amazed at this whole new world that didn’t exist.  So much possibility.  The same could probably be said for someone learning something new for the first time.

You Can Still Use the Rear View Mirror

Reflection is an important part of learning so there are times when you need to look back. Just don’t use the past as your primary means of moving forward.

Go clean off your windshield and see what’s out there!

Every Problem (post from Kirk Weisler)

Image

Here are a few lines from the book, Getting Things Done Fast by David Allen.

Every “problem” comes down to two things:

1)  You know what you want, but you don’t know how to get it

2)  You don’t know what you want

Nobody can say they have a problem that doesn’t boil down to one of those two things.  You have to make it up or make it happen.

“You only complain about things that you assume should be different than they currently are – you’re just not taking the risk to make it so.”

Just Before Beginning Your Day…

Just before beginning your day ask yourself about how you are going to spend this wonderful day. Would you think about bad experience in your past or worry about how to make your future better or live only for this day? Would you hate yourself because people are not liking you? Would you think that I am lonely because I don’t have friends? Would you underestimate yourself if others said something which you felt to be right? Would you work only for money? Would you blame your parents or your life for whatever you are right now? Would you only think about yourself? Would you think about your problems, illness and disorder everyday? Would you react and get angry with everyone coming on your way due to carrying all those burdens mentioned above? The answer is simple. Forgive, Forget and move on. This is the day which will give you happiness, prosperity and peace. You decide something and go for it. If you believe that you can reach there then all you have to do is die for it. You are greater than you think. Your potential is beyond your imagination. The time will come that you know something about life which others cannot figure it out. ~ Tejas Patel

What Friends & Strangers DO… Thankful for 5 (from Kirk Weisler – Motivational Speaker) One of my favorites!!

We just recently celebrated our daughters Ashlyn’s 5th birthday.  She didn’t want a cake… she wanted Dunkin Donut holes?!  So there you go.   As we rush towards this Thanks giving weekend… I find myself reflecting on and thankful for what has been a most challenging and wonderful year.  I am sure most of us have had times in our lives that didn’t go like we hoped, we planned or even as we prayed they would.  Instead they somehow were worse than we wanted …and better than we expected at the same time.

Our bitter sweet year included our Ashlyn spending an unwelcomed and unwanted month in ICU fighting for her life… and us praying for it.  But we did not pray alone.  Literally thousands of friends, and strangers, prayed with us and for us.  And our little Ashlyn miraculously pulled through.   Our family felt the undeniable lift of this outpouring of love, faith and friendship.  The bitter was lost in the sweet….and we promised ourselves we would never forget what we had received.  And each day as we look at our Ashlyn we continue to see a miracle.  Nearly every day since then has been like the day we came home from the hospital.  As a result of this unwanted experience our family lives in a better place and we have become a better family.

Every family activity, every picture we take..it’s like we all know how blessed we are to have her in it…and how heart breaking it would be if she was not.   We find ourselves praying much more fervently and feeling much more empathy for the many around us have lost family members and those close to them. This awareness and thoughtfulness of others reinforces and magnifies our gratefulness.

It is said that ” It is wise to be grateful… for those that are grateful are humble and those that are  humble are grateful.

Something else I am very grateful for.   A few of my close friends (Motivational Speaker Types), knowing that our family did not have medical insurance, and that a month in ICU can be pricey began planning a 2nd miracle for our family so that our family wouldn’t be selling our home to pay off our medical bills.

I have put off sharing this here for nearly 3 months now because I felt a bit awkward about it …for obvious reasons.  But I have, with encouragement, come to the conclusion that to not share this with you would not honor my friends who organized and donated their time to create it.

I hope that none of you are offended by it, or feel obligated to participate in any way.

It’s a website called http://www.miraclesforashlyn.com/   Each of them recorded a 10-15 minute video sharing their personal strategies & thoughts on what motivators do to stay motivated…when times are hard and stress is high.  There is also a downloadable workbook. They wanted to create something of real value so that people who chose to make a donation would receive so much more than a good feeling.

I suspect most of you know Ashlyn’s story…but for the few of you who do not and who might like to know.  Most of the blog entries are posted at http://humanbecomings.wordpress.com/

Thank you my friends…and have most glorious and grateful Thanksgiving.

Something to think about

Life is truly beautiful when we know we have made a difference. No matter how small or insignificant that difference might seem to you, for the one receiving it, it could mean the world. The smallest gestures sometimes mean the most.  -Anita Papas

“Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.” – Unknown

“Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” – Unknown

“Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It’s OK to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing.” – Anne Sullivan

” When life gives you 100 reason to CRY, show life that you have 1000 reason to SMILE. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.”-Emmanuel Tiwo
