I Forgot I Had That ——(post by Kirk Weisler)

you never know

Cleaning out the van the other day and there it was. The DVD of Finding Nemo that we thought we had lost or loaned away.

Clearing my desk a few weeks ago and there it was. An un-deposited check that would help to pay a bill.

Looking in the storage unit for the extra seat for the van we just sold… and there it was, a favorite toy of our daughter.

Organizing my books in our new book and there THEY were! All the books I was going to get around to reading.

Don’t even get me going on what might be on those back up hard drives!

deep sea treasure

There are people diving deep into the oceans looking for treasures. Maybe we don’t need to go to deep water to find them. Maybe the some of the most valuable things we would like to find our hidden from our view because of other stuff.

I was looking for a deeper connection to our 16-year-old son the other day.

He was bummed because he had just gotten his license and wrecked the family car 2 days later.

I was just grateful no one was hurt and that he was OK.

But he wasn’t OK…. he was distant and discouraged.

And my attempts to connect and left his spirits seemed to be falling flat.

I wished I could just fly with him to New York and watch a Broadway Play (his favorite thing in the world). But this was not possible. I thought of several things like this …but the messy schedules we had didn’t make it possible. I finally was able to clear my mind(clean up the mess) and then felt to offer him the same chance.

“Hey son, why we take a drive in this cool new rental car and push all the buttons, open the sun roof and turn on some tunes. Let’s go for a joy ride.”

Dad, whats a joy ride? (dang it I am old)

I attempt to explain, “A joy ride is just driving without intending to go anywhere — you just drive, empty your mind of worry, let thoughts come and go and enjoy the drive. “

Sounds great Dad…let’s go.

And we drove, and we drove and listened to ZZ TOP and other songs from when I wasn’t old. There was a guy selling Jerky by the side of the road and we stopped and talked with him and bought some. And then we drove and pushed all the buttons and chewed on jerky. And there was a guy by the side of the road selling bee pollen and honey…. and we bought some and then we listened to some of Josh’s music. And Josh said, “I’m glad we did this Dad, I like Joy Riding”.

And I thought about how much I love him and about how much I will treasure this drive….for a long long time.

And I thought about how easy it is to lose site of the most important things in our life because of the mess.

Clean Your Room, Clear Your Mind, and Enjoy the Ride…

Watch What Happens After Homeless Child is Ignored in Freezing Cold for Hours

homeless-child-video

What would you do if you saw a homeless child standing in the streets in five-degree weather?

If you’re like these people, you’d more than likely turn your head, ignore, and keep it moving.

In a new social experiment conducted by OckTV, a little boy disguises himself as a homeless person, begging for food and money on a street in NYC.

While hundreds of people walk past him like he’s invisible, the one person to lend a helping hand is actually homeless himself — with nothing to offer except the clothes off his own back.

What he does next will truly move you.

Watch the powerful video below:

The Great Thing About Right Now (post by Kirk Weisler)

act now

“I can feel guilty about the past, apprehensive about the future, but only in the present can I act. The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.” Abraham Maslow

The great thing about right now is that right now I can choose to act. I can choose to change, to grow, to become.

Opportunity – Don’t Miss It (post by Kirk Weisler)

richard

We still live in a world that’s filled with opportunity. In fact, we have more than an opportunity — we have an obligation. An obligation to spend our time doing great things. To find ideas that matter and to share them. To push ourselves and the people around us to demonstrate gratitude, insight, and inspiration. To take risks and to make the world better by being amazing. ~ Seth Godin

Clearing Snow – Free Hugs – Call Your Love Ones!!

shoveling snow

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia high school senior who spends snow days clearing snow and ice from neighborhood driveways and sidewalks saw something out of his mother’s car window that compelled him to tell her to stop the car, CBS Richmond affiliate WTVR-TV reports.

Teresa Adams and her son Tommy were driving home from the DMV when they drove past an older man who was trying to shovel snow from his driveway. The man was using a walker to get around.

“Tommy said ‘Mamma stop the car,'” Teresa Adams said. “I got scared and asked, ‘What’s wrong?'”

He said, “There’s an older man with a walker shoveling snow — I’ll help him out,” she added.

Tommy approached the man and asked him for the snow shovel.

“He looked surprised,” Teresa Adams said. “I was so proud, I started to cry.”

Teresa snapped a photo of her son’s good deed. That photo was later shared on the WTVR Facebook page.

“He was relieved; he looked tired,” Tommy said. “I told him to get back into his car because it was cold. Other people who saw him in the snow should have had the decency to stop.”

Tommy said it appeared a plow had driven by and built up the snow on the man’s driveway. He said the snow was deep and it took him more than 15 minutes to clear the driveway for the man.

“He said ‘God bless you, the world needs more people like you,'” Tommy said.

Tommy said he did not catch the man’s name, but he was glad he was there to help.

“I try to do good for the elderly because one day I may need help too,” Tommy said.

Life for Me

dancer

“Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor —
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now —
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”
