Do You Carry Excess Baggage? (post by Kirk Weisler)

baggages

After 20 years of traveling professionally I have learned a lot about packing light.  And I have seen a good share of people bring along a couple of bags “just in case”stuff often paying $50 to check these bags so they’ll have a $25 item if it’s needed.  They have also told me that actually use less than 1/3rd of what they pack.  Then there’s my wife’s cousin Vanessa who somehow managed to travel to 7 countries with a back pack designed for college books.  (And she always seemed to look great as she traveled light and lived free.)

“All of us carry excess baggage around from time to time, but the wisest ones among us don’t carry it around for very long.  They get rid of it.  Some of it you have to get rid of without really solving the problem.  Some things that ought to be put in order are not put in order because you can’t control them.  Often, however, the things we carry are petty, even stupid.  If you are still mad after all these years because Aunt Clara didn’t come to your wedding reception, why don’t you grow up?  Forget it”. ~ Boyd K. Packer

So don’t carry for excess baggage yourself and don’t carry it for others!  ~ Kirk Out

For 3 years, this man stood on the same street corner

For 3 years, this man stood on the same street corner — rain or shine. And for years, people drove right past him. But one day, a woman stopped. When she heard his story, she broke down into tears, and ended up “saving” him”: http://cbsn.ws/2lXtX7A

When we don’t want to hear it….(post by Kirk Weisler)

 no hear

Dr. Robert Anthony has said, “The thing you resist is the thing you most need to hear. ”

ashyln

I remember when our daughter Ashlyn was about 3 years old how she would act when she knew I was about to say something she didn’t want to hear.   For example, when she saw  me walking up to her with a toothbrush, or a bottle of medicine, or her PJs she would say, “Don’t say it Daddy”.  She didn’t want to hear anything  about what she doesn’t want to do anything about.

joseph

Our little Joseph who is now three does almost the exact same thing but asks for my confirmation of my hearing him to get a verbal commitment from me… “Don’t say it daddy,…. Ok?”

la la la

Of course as adults we don’t engage in this type of behavior….do we?

Like  this man and like the woman pictured above Ashlyn and Joseph  were emotionally putting hands over their ears.  My teenage son and daughter use earphones and music instead of their hands.

What do we use when we don’t want to hear what we know we need to hear?

I often use my schedule as a tool to resist listening to what I need to hear.

When my body is telling to eat more healthy and exercise I too often try to block the message with a movie, or a nap.

Organizations do the same thing.  The culture isn’t right, the morale and engagement is low…but leaders put their hands over their ears and refuse to listen to the message that real change is needed, from them.

What do you use to stop from listening?  And a more important question … what is it you most need to hear?  And the most important question…. What are you going do about it?

Can you hear me now?  Are you even listening smiley

Make it a great day, by listening to what you need to hear.Kirk Out

If You Won’t Share Your Hotdog…(Post by Kirk Weisler)

(In 2008 Janet Carner sent me the following piece of wisdom in response to a T4D message from Jim Rohn called “The Challenge of Life”)

Janet writes…

A woman once told me “If you won’t share your hotdogs, you won’t share your steak.”   That phrase really struck me.  Much like the ‘if I had a lot of money, I would be more generous” attitude mentioned in the T4D and sometimes prevalent in our thinking.  It highlights the trap of waiting to become what you want to be and the fallacy of a truly generous nature only when you have more than you could possibly use yourself.  If you want to be a generous and giving person, the time to be that is NOW.  Share your hotdog, so that when you’re in a position to have steak on your plate you’ll have the attitude and habit of sharing.

The Great Challenge of Life by Jim Rohn

Here’s the great challenge of life – You can have more than you’ve got because you can become more than you are.

I have found that income seldom will exceed your own personal development. Once in a while income takes a lucky jump, but unless you grow out to where it is it will go back to where you are. Somebody once said if you took all the money in the world and divided it among everyone equally, it would soon be back in the same pockets. However, you can have more because you can become more. You see, here is how the other side of the coin reads – unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got. The marketing plan won’t do it. It’s a good plan but it won’t work without you. You’ve got to work it. It is the human effort that counts. If you could send a sales manual out to recruit – wouldn’t that be lovely? The major thing that makes the difference is what YOU do.

In order to have more, you need to become more. The guy says “If I had a good job I would really pour it on, but I have this lousy job so I just goof off.” If that is your philosophy you are destined to stay there. Some people say if I had a lot of money I would be really generous, but I don’t have much so I’m not generous. See, you’ve got to change that philosophy or you will never have “the lots of money”. Unless YOU change, IT won’t change. Amazingly, however, when we throw out our blame list and start becoming more ourselves – the difference is everything else will begin to change around us.

Who ever shares the most hotdogs gets a ride in my new car.

Wow, wouldn’t the teenagers loved to be dropped off at school in this?
