The three great essentials to achieving anything worthwhile are; first, hard work, second, stick-to-it-iveness, and third, common sense. — Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931) American Inventor
Do you ever get the impression that common sense isn’t really that common? That perhaps it’s even a rare gift or a diminishing talent? I know that when I see it or experience it is a beautiful and refreshing thing. Is it a Super power? Maybe not….but it can be super important to our success as leaders and team members !
Where does common sense come from? (Must we be bitten by the radio-active common sense spider?)
Is common sense something you either have or you don’t?
Can it be developed in others and strengthened in ourselves?
I don’t pretend to have all the answers to these questions but I am interested in hearing your opinions.
My own answer is yes,. Like any talent or muscle it can be developed and strengthened through practice. I do like the picture of our hero character saying “Shhhh, My common sense is tingling.” I think one of the greatest exercises a person might do is to train themselves to take a moment to listen to that inner voice, especially after asking themselves a question such as, “Is this the best choice I can make?” or “What is the best way that this might be approached?” I also like, “How will this choice I am about to make affect others?”
I have also many times had the thought that just because something “can be done” doesn’t mean that it should be done.
Shhhh, I feel something tingling. It’s not my common sense, it’s just my phone on vibrate. Time to go.
Make it a great day…. use your CS SUPER POWER!
